Blog 26 Nov 16The newly elected MHKs have now been in post for two months – time continues to pass by very quickly at the moment.

After getting a few hours to myself last week, no such luck this week with a full calendar of meetings, briefings and constituency issues.

Monday started with a briefing with the Clerk of the Environment and Infrastructure Policy Review Committee.

This was followed with a meeting with representatives of two Douglas Hotels that have some industry concerns. After lunch on Monday I headed down to the Claremont Hotel for the Isle of Man Accolade Awards, which I really enjoyed.

Tuesday was the Keys Sitting, which was relatively short and this enabled me to catch up with my MHK colleagues, including a twenty minute chat with the Chief Minister. To be perfectly honest, I am still trying getting to know the Chief Minister, we don’t talk very often compared to other Ministers and MHK’s.

On Tuesday there was also a presentation on the Equality Bill, which is an extremely difficult Bill to get your head around. The rest of Tuesday was taken by prep work and constituent issues.

Wednesday started with a meeting with head teachers and their representatives, which was followed by a briefing on the promenade refurbishment proposals. I am looking forward to getting things started on the promenade in order to kick start several vital sectors on the island. After lunch I went down to the Villa Marina to attend and support the DHSC Awards Ceremony.

On Thursday I suddenly realised that it was 16.00 and I hadn’t even had my breakfast, another lesson learnt – keep some breakfast bars handy. The day started at 8am with some prep work, I then went down to the Members room to meet the WI members for the WI Sitting of Tynwald later on in the morning.

The WI Sitting of Tynwald was fantastic, although again my nerves are still getting the better of me in the Chamber. I think I need a topic that I am 100% comfortable with in order to kick start my confidence.

Straight after the Tynwald sitting I headed over to DED to attend two meetings relating to booking several acts for the Villa and Gaiety in 2017 and a TT briefing and update.

After taking Ellen to the Airport yesterday, I headed down to an Isle of Man Construction Forum meeting, which started at 8am. The rest of the morning gave me an opportunity to catch up on the reading mountain and some prep work.

In the afternoon I attended the opening of the “Forget Me Not Bereavement Suite” at Nobles Hospital, which was very special.

Catching up with more reading today and attending Manx Radio at lunchtime tomorrow.
